Can the pump pull a negative column?
It's recommended that the pump has a steady supply greater than its GPM, with a PSI range of 30-60 PSI, depending on your pump.
Can you make do in a pinch?
Sure, but be careful not to starve the pump and void your warranty. Issues such as cavitation and overheating are likely to occur. Use a foot valve and ensure you're using at least a 1 1/2 inch supply line.
